Industrial transition for a Smart Europe
Me3DI forms an industrial knowledge cluster of metal 3D printing in South Karelia, Eastern part of Finland. Transition of companies towards digital business transformation is supported by educational and RD resources of LUT University. Key set of technologies for metal parts production are adopted by every major advanced manufacturing segment. Regional metal 3D printing ecosystem enables students and companies to develop skills for shaping the future they want, one layer at a time.
This is a research project that has resulted in a medical device for physical therapy, innovative on a global scale (Viofor S-PRO). The product stands out due to the use of modern technologies enabling remote control; with this feature the treatment takes place also at home. The solution takes into account the needs of the hearing impaired and visually impaired, as well as Polish and foreign users. The key to the project’s success was cooperation with the scientific industry and the end users.

Helping promising start-ups and ambitious scale-ups to develop sustainable innovations for the chemistry of the future on an industrial scale. This is the objective of BlueChem, the first incubator in Belgium that focuses on innovations and entrepreneurship in sustainable chemistry. BlueChem is a unique partnership between government, industry and knowledge institutions with the joint ambition to strengthen the chemical industry in Flanders and to develop products for the circular economy.
ENERMAC project seeks solutions that contribute to the incorporation of renewable energies and energy efficiency in the industrial sector and other associated economies of Macaronesia and West Africa territories. Among other activities, this project has carried out actions related to the optimization of a wind pumped-hydro station-Gorona del Viento, the deployment of a platform to test microgrids, the installation of two pilot biogas plants and the use of solar thermal in industrial processes.
The main challenge of the TITTAN project is to address the alarming ageing of the European population. TITTAN seeks to strengthen active and healthy ageing by improving Europe's regional health systems. The project is helping its 7 partners to improve their regional policy instruments to tackle this problem. There is an extremely high knowledge about health sector necessities around the hospital´s professionals that industrial network is not able to use because of different circumstances. The Utrecht district Lombok is internationally known for its Smart Solar Charging innovation: locally produced solar power is used to charge electric cars and can be delivered back to the power grid when needed, making an important contribution to ensuring a reliable electricity grid of the future. The project develops, tests and upscales the Lombok system in five linked living labs in the Utrecht region representing different customer types, user profiles and markets.
NWCAM is a virtual Life and Health Sciences (LHS) cluster of 16 projects. 10 businesses work with 4 HEI’s in 3 countries to innovate products and processes in the sector using 21stC Advanced Manufacturing. An innovative Triple Helix model, it centres upon the deployment of specialist ‘innovation brokers’ who effectively manage the relationship between researchers and market experts to deliver maximum commercial impact. Early successes include smart labels, eco-polymers and robotics.
DruIDe (printable identification - Druckbare IDentifikation in German) is initiated in order to develop a worldwide new RFID technology. This innovative system will allow reading out chipless and printable RFID tags based on nanotechnology, without any losses, neither in information depth nor in robustness. In comparison to traditional RFID systems, the price per RFID tag will be reduced dramatically. Ultimate goal is to replace the existing barcodes by the newly developed RFID tags.
“Smart Blue Regions” enabled officials from public administrations in six coastal regions at the Baltic Sea to trigger more and sustainable growth in the marine and maritime sectors. The regions’ officials could have done business as usual but instead, these six regions decided to take a more innovative approach: To use their RIS3 as a basis for creating an transnational innovation eco-system for blue growth by cooperating with their potential competitors (other regions at the Baltic Sea).

E-FESTO is the new technology that revolutionises how you cook using innovative energy-efficient gas burners: all flame power levels, equivalent to 4 rings today, are included in a single burner. Based on 8 patents and IoT-ready, E-FESTO represents technical and aesthetic progress: the special type of combustion of the pressurised, premixed burners reduces grill height by half and allows the hob to be digitally controlled from a touch screen.
In Europe, more than 99% of the companies are SMEs. Making more competitive the SMEs of the Pays Basque-Aquitaine/Euskadi/Navarra territory has been the Project objective. Based on the cross-border cooperation, the project has involved companies, clusters, technology centres and economic development agencies. Three cooperation hubs have been created about three key sectors for the territory: additive manufacturing; Big Data and Artificial Intelligence; and medical devices and e-health.

The free materials research portal Material Hub interconnects research and industrial data providing a unified easy access. This supports the Saxon materials community, improves accessibility of information and interconnects stakeholders to encourage joint industrial projects. The plants of the ocean have unimagined powers and effects. Some beneficial effects have been discovered by accident and now the project FucoSan is on the trail of brown algae, which can help in ophthalmology, bone healing and cosmetics. The results are made available in a database to other scientists. Companies are also involved. In this way innovative products and procedures are developed in the German-Danish border region, helping to establish sustainable jobs in harmony with the ocean.
The main objective of AIR CARDIO is create a Telemonitoring system in the hospital-territory path for congenital pediatric heart disease, which involves the patient's home, family members and hospital staff. It aims at the development of innovative digital technologies such as: low-invasive wearable sensors to monitoring the state of health; systems approach to ensure data security; sorting functions of wearable sensors, and in the cloud to to generate alarms and accuracy of clinical decisions.
The project aims to create a laboratory of excellence for the study and development of innovative systems and approaches for flexible human-centred production. The project provided four pilot activities that show interactive dashboards based on the real big data collected from the pilot partners. The BDC continues to provide these services and waits for your data to provide you with the crucial information.
One of the most sophisticated scientific tools is a laser emitting very short pulses. Pulses as short as 10 femtosecond - allows understanding what is happening inside materials or during chemical reactions. It is very important if one wants to know how to control materials properties, how to create new chemical molecules, medicines to conquer viruses. TRUST project was dedicated to creation of laser emitting those short pulses, which could be affordable for many scientific laboratories.

But they need support in seizing new business opportunities rooted in key enabling technologies (KETs), which are vital in this industrial shift. The KETGATE project helps them to access these new technologies. AGERAR improves the management of renewable energies through using experimental facilities to assess energy storage technologies and their applications.
AlpFoodway safeguards Alpine food heritage to turn it into a driver of innovation and sustainable development fostering smart specialization in peripheral Alpine areas. After identifying the heritage worth preserving, it created and tested new intergenerational transmission formats and marketing tools. The project initiated a process, now coordinated by a Lombardy Region’s task force, to inscribe Alpine Food Heritage in UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity
FOLIUM programme has attracted and promoted the development of talented young researchers offering postdoctoral positions in innovative areas in Balearic Islands Health Research Institute. FOLIUM has promoted the sustainability and quality of employment among the selected researchers, has contributed to increase the level of RD investment in the Balearic Islands and it has fostered one of the region’s smart specialisation priorities, which is applying biotechnology to health
ESA Portugal Space Solutions Centre promotes space technologies on innovative solutions to non-space markets, being a pioneer in Europe. This project is used to support entrepreneurs who intend to use space assets to generate new business in smart cities, transports and logistics, health, agriculture, blue economy or environment. Overall the project had an impact in the first 5 years of more than 11,5 M€, generated more than 100 highly skilled jobs in 30 innovative startups.

The technology of dicomLAB integrates all background procedures and key actors of dental implantology in a standardized and patient/case-specific way, in a cutting-edge virtual environment supported by AI. This platform serves dentists with the individual patient in the focus with the ultimate goal of making dental implant therapy accessible for a wider population.
The subject of the project was construction of infrastructure and equipping the RD Center for RES in Pila. The RD infrastructure is necessary to enable seek and research of new materials based on nanodisperse systems, liquid crystals and dyes to produce a photovoltaic cell with high efficiency of light converting into electricity or a high-efficiency wind turbine.
The SMARTBIOCONTROL project portfolio unites 26 partners from the French-Belgian cross-border area to build a technological platform for driving the industrial transition allowing a reduced pesticide use. We selected and evaluated10 new biopesticides and developed an innovative process for their production at industrial scale, . We also set up a new biosensor to monitor the biocontrol agent in the field and the presence of phytopathogens responsible for the targeted disease.
The Interreg North Sea Region HyTrEc2 project is delivering a future where people drive vehicles using green hydrogen made from the planet's wind and solar rays. Already we have demonstrated that HyTrEc2 and other hydrogen vehicles are saving 188 tonnes of CO2e emissions. We are successfully stimulating an energy transition and clean economic growth in Europe while ensuring that businesses have the skills and knowledge needed to deliver next generation transport.
The flagship project of the Lower Austrian Digitalization strategy “House of Digitalization” established a regional ecosystem of education, science, business and administration. The project co-funded by ERDF connects complementary expertise and infrastructure to promote digital solutions in Lower Austrian companies. Results range from new qualification formats to new products and processes developed and efficient solutions for the problems caused by the COVID 19 shut-down.
Incineration units allow waste destroying and energy production by using high temperatures leading to a fast wear of boiler refractory linings and their fixations anchors. The ECOVAL project aims, for Walloon units, a decrease of materials wear and refractory waste as well. Valuation expected is innovative materials (higher lifetime/recyclability). Involving all the value chain “links”, a circular economy scheme could be set up with strengthening of the Walloon refractory SMEs competitiveness.
S34Growth supports the renewal of Europe’s industry and competitiveness. New interregional industrial value chains have been built, more than 20 good practices have been identified and transferred to other regions, and an interregional approach to smart specialisation has been added to current and future policy instruments of Structural Funds. S34Growth influenced over 15 MEUR of Structural Funds in the process.
The objective of SPIRE 2 is the facilitation of new distributed energy and storage to participate in existing and future energy markets and to open up opportunities for a consumer led transition of the new decarbonised energy economy and systems enabled by new technologies and business models. SPIRE 2 will support the development of distributed energy storage solutions which will allow very high levels of non-controllable renewable energy to be integrated into power systems.
How can we foster innovation? Our proposition: cross-sectoral work! The 17 projects involved in the GoToS3-portfolio cover different aspects of the innovation chain in 6 key-sectors of the French-Belgian cross-border region. We gather a hundred of different structures, mainly actors in research, innovation and economic development, who give form to a cross-sectoral and cross-border innovation ecosystem dedicated to help the industrial transition local companies and support their business growth.

PHU P.A.R.K Katarzyna Porada's project meets the needs of consumers and coffee producers around the world. It has an international significance and dimension.
Sybilla is an IT security platform for the analysis and correlation of events within IT infrastructures, with a specific focus on data network traffic. Sybilla implements Machine Learning and Behavior Analysis algorithms to identify the "normal" functioning of an infrastructure and consequently detect any anomalies. The collected data are processed by pipelines that reorganize the information and add metadata to be used in the analysis stage. User-friendly dashboards visualize data and alerts
Smart Security Platform (SSP) aims to increase safety in public spaces. SSP is an AI-based monitoring solution integrated with city lights that allow automatic detection of a fight, shooting, faint, dangerous gases, or recognition of wanted people (i.e. terrorists). Based on detected events an alert can be generated and security services can be informed. Thanks to the integration with city lights an automatic actions to distract aggressors can be taken.
The CDIF/3 U project was created as a supporting tool for those involved in the evaluation of technical condition of vehicles. The device has a carefully selected range of functions related to reading vehicle data registered in the event of a collision. Based on data readouts, it is possible to determine the course of a collision and also consider it in the aspect of time and mileage. It is also possible to precisely determine the extent of damage to the vehicle as a result of an incident.
The aim of the project was to launch an automatic measuring cell to inspect objects with remote user. An autonomous cell, equipped with a robot, laser scanner and tracker, as well as a tracking camera system and remote access software was created. Image transmission and contact was enabled, allowing interaction between the remote user and measuring system. The recipient does not have to leave his job, saving time, financial resources and maintaining a social distance during the pandemic period.
Development of a system to prevent the expansion of the invasive species, the Yellow Legged hornet " (Vespa velutina), in Balearic Islands. This has been carried out through the creation of a mobile application ("Vespapp") and the use of the social networks for the identification and location of the specimens, the design and implementation of an on-line cartographic viewer for the monitoring of the species and the elaboration of a prediction model of its dispersion.
